Helping Kids Grieve
Helping kids grieve
Breaking hard news to children is never an easy prospect - but whether it’s parents deciding to separate, the death of a loved one, or any event which can cause trauma for a child, there are some points which will help.
- Keep it simple, small pieces of information spread out gradually may be best
- Remind them that they can revisit the conversation and ask questions at any time
- See the news from their perspective - keep around 80% of the talk on the impact on their world, rather than yours
- Let them see your emotions, but reassure them that everything will be OK. They need to know that pain heals with time and you are strong enough to cope
