Medbury School - Play The Game
Medbury - Independent School for Boys

Curriculum

The school currently has 14 classes. The largest has 25 boys, the smallest has 15 and there is a maximum class size set of 25 boys.

Every class has a core curriculum of English, Maths, Social Studies, Science, Information communication technology, physical education, divinity, art, health, music and general knowledge. In addition, the school offers French to Year 7 and above.

A specialist teaching system is operated throughout the school which means a boy may be taught by as many as six different teachers each week. This system enables teachers to teach to their “passion” for dedicated expert tuition, and ensures that we have a fairer picture of each boy.

Medbury School Curriculum
Medbury School follows the curriculum guidelines of the New Zealand Government Ministry of Education. Within this framework we place particular emphasis on:

  • reading skills as a basis for all other curriculum work
  • teaching of spelling and English grammar rules
  • basic rules of Maths and learning of tables
  • teaching of library research
  • computer skills
  • teaching of Social Studies with emphasis on History and Geography
  • our environment as a basis for the Science programme
  • the added dimension brought by Music, Art and Drama

Establishing good work habits
The first and most critical aim is to help the boy to establish good work habits. He will be expected to write neatly, to set out his work carefully, to keep a diary and to organise his prep properly, to be able to listen attentively and to be able to take part responsibly in oral discussion.

Personal assessment and extension
Our second major objective is to assess where each boy needs extension or support to challenge him through a flexible programme that recognises the individual's potential. We put certain incentives before him:

  • a merit award system which enables him to achieve certificates leading to an Honours Award.
  • an effort card system which is an assessment by his teachers every six weeks of the amount of effort he has put into his work. He shares this card with his parents, which keeps everyone in touch with his progress and it acts as a good incentive to him.
  • an exam and report system giving details of his school progress and a comprehensive picture which is shared between boys, parents and staff.

As a stimulus to the academic standard of the School, two Scholarships covering up to two thirds of the tuition fees and are available to boys entering their Year Six year, whether or not they are present Medbury pupils.

We have an outstanding record of scholarship awards to secondary schools.

Christian Education
Christian and values education are integral parts of the Medbury curriculum. Church services and class lessons are an essential part of Christian education, and are also important to the ethos of our school and the values and character we wish to nurture in our boys.

All boys are expected to attend their respective church services at St. Barnabas Church, and prayers and hymn singing are a part of each school assembly. Weekly Divinity lessons are also taught.
