Medbury - Independent School for Boys

Science Department

The Science Department at Medbury School is headed by Mr Jan Taylor.  Jan is currently studying part time for his MSc at the University of Canterbury and is working in the field of ornithology.

Science at Medbury is tailored to deal with the educational needs of boys. The programme is based on the New Zealand Curriculum, it is also very practical and 'hands-on', with emphasis being placed on application of science understanding. Medbury's science room is well equipped with the latest in interactive whiteboard technology, microscopes and laboratory equipment.

Boys benefit from an interactive, practical approach to science. The science units that are taught are designed to reflect the interests of boys - with topics such as Violent Volcanoes, Awesome Animals, Hogwarts Chemistry and the 'Science of Flight'.

Medbury has an exciting science and technology programme tailored to engage boys in learning more about how systems work, and how technology can be applied.  A range of hands on, fun activities have been organised this year.  Years 4 to 8 will have their own opportunity to be involved in a Science and Technology Evening and the dates are set out below:

Thursday 29 September 2011, 5:30pm - 7:30pm - Year 8

Gifted and Talented Programme

Boys with a strong interest in Science will be invited to take part in Science and Technology projects this year, including participating in the Lincoln University Science and Technology Fair.

Royal Society CREST

Boys from Years 7 and 8 with higher ability or a particular interest in Science are invited to participate in the Royal Society of New Zealand’s CREST scheme. CREST works in very well with the Canterbury-Westland Science Fair. CREST is designed to encourage an inquiry-based approach and this provides an excellent platform for the boys to extend themselves. Boys develop their own investigation on some aspect of Science or Technology and are rewarded with recognition from the Royal Society with the added bonus of showing their hard work off to the general public at the Science Fair.
